Kakunodate is about 5km around the town.
Starting from Kakunodate Station, you can stroll through Uchimachi and Samurai Residence Street (about a 15-minute walk from Kakunodate Station), then go around Sotomachi and Tamachi Samurai Residence Street before returning to Kakunodate Station, which is about a 5-kilometer walk. There are many tourist attractions within the town, so you can walk around without feeling like you've walked a long distance.
Rickshaws, rental bicycles and taxis are also available, so please use them if walking is difficult for you.
To the shores of Lake Tazawa
Take the Nyuto Line bus from JR Tazawako Station and get off at Lake Tazawa, and you'll arrive in Shirahama, the bustling eastern gateway to the lake (approximately 15 minutes).
Lake Tazawa is about 20km in circumference and can be travelled around by car or by the Tazawako Loop Line bus.
If you are using the Akita Airport Liner from Akita Airport, please get off at the Tazawako area of the Nyuto-go train (approximately 100 minutes).
To the Dakigaeri Valley
To the Dakigaeri Valley
Please take a taxi from Kakunodate Station or JR Tazawako Station. (Approximately 15 minutes from JR Kakunodate Station / 20 minutes from JR Tazawako Station)
There are no regular bus services.
From Kakunodate, the on-demand transportation service "Yobunoru Kakunodate" is convenient.
To get to Nyuto Onsenkyo
Take the Nyuto Line bus from JR Tazawako Station and get off at Nyuto Onsenkyo, where you will arrive at the hidden hot springs of Nyuto Onsenkyo (approximately 45 minutes).
*However, please note that the nearest bus stop varies depending on your accommodation.
If you are taking the Akita Airport Liner from Akita Airport, please use the Nyuto bus and select one of the accommodations in Nyuto Onsenkyo. (Travel time: approximately 130 minutes)
To Tazawako Kogen Onsen and Mizusawa Onsen
Please take the "Nyuto Line" bus from JR Tazawako Station (approximately 30 minutes).
If you are taking the Akita Airport Liner from Akita Airport, please use the Nyuto-go train and select one of the accommodations in Mizusawa Onsenkyo or Tazawako Kogen Onsenkyo (travel time: approximately 130 minutes).
To Tamagawa Onsen and Hachimantai
Please take the Hachimantai Line bus from JR Tazawako Station. (Travel time: approx. 150 minutes to the summit of Hachimantai / approx. 80 minutes to Tamagawa Onsen)
*For information on the operating times for the Hachimantai Line, please check with the operating company (Ugo Kotsu Tazawako Office, Tel: 0187-43-1511).
*During the winter, the line switches to the Shin-Tamagawa Line and Tamagawa Line, and there are no services to Hachimantai.
Towards Nishiki
Please take the Akita Nairiku Line from Kakunodate Station.
To get to the Yatsuka-Kamatari Katakuri Colony, take the Akita Inland Line, get off at Yatsuka Station, and walk for 5 minutes.
To get to the Kamihikinai Paper Balloon Festival, which is held every year on February 10th, take the Akita Inland Line, get off at Kamihikinai, and walk for 7 minutes.
