Kakunodate Hina Doll Tour🎎
Hina dolls handed down through the samurai family
At the Kakunodate Hina Doll Tour, you can see the oldest Hina dolls dating back about 300 years, including Kyoho-bina, Kokin-bina, Oshie-bina, and clay dolls that have been carefully passed down from generation to generation. Old families such as the Satake Kita family have passed down ancient Hina dolls such as Kyoho-bina and Kokin-bina, which were brought from Kyoto and Edo, as well as time-honored Hina doll accessories.

“Oshie” were actively produced in the townspeople’s quarters of Kakunodate from the end of the Edo period to the early Showa period, and many of them are unique pieces based on Kabuki, Tenjin-sama, Empress Jingu, and auspicious objects. What is oshie? It is a doll made by pasting pieces of cloth onto a stencil with overlapping sections based on a rough sketch, and filling the gaps with cotton to create a three-dimensional effect. In Kakunodate, local painters and festival doll makers were responsible for the faces, and many highly finished and artistic dolls have been left behind. Another characteristic of Kakunodate oshie is that they are relatively thick.
