Kakunodate Sasara Dance

Kakunodate's Sasara Dance, which has a history of over 400 years, is the local name for the lion dance. It is called "Sasara Dance" because the dancers play a wooden instrument called a "sasara." The Satake family was exiled from Hitachi to Akita. It is said to have originated when the dance stood at the head of the procession accompanying Lord Satake Yoshinobu, driving away evil spirits and comforting the lord along the way. Today, it is performed as an Obon event to honor ancestors and new Buddhas, and for a bountiful harvest.
