Tazawako station, and was renamed to its current name in 1966 (Showa 41) when the entire line between Morioka and Omagari stations was opened. The current station building, which was renovated in 1997 to coincide with the opening of the Akita Shinkansen, features a design that makes extensive use of glass windows so that trains arriving at the platform can be seen from various locations within the station, and won the Good Design Award in 1998.
