Special Exhibition "Kunimasu - From Extinction to Discovery"

企画展「クニマス〜絶滅から発見まで〜」

Schedule

October 4th (Sat) - November 30th (Sun) 9:00am - 4:00pm

Event details

The Tazawako Kunimasu Trout Museum will hold a special autumn exhibition, displaying the oldest specimen of Kunimasu found in Tazawako, as well as the "Kuchiguromus," discovered at the University of Tokyo.

In the early 1930s, when severe crop famines were occurring frequently and war was looming, Tazawako was developed with the aim of increasing food production and developing power sources.
In exchange, the lake lost many living creatures and beautiful scenery. What happened in that process, and what efforts people made? This is not well known. The last kunimasu fisherman, Miura Kyubei, had an unbearable longing for the lake as it is today, and he visited lakes where kunimasu eggs had been sold in the past, searching for them until the end of his life. Although he was unable to reunite with the fish during his lifetime, his passion for searching for kunimasu led to the confirmation of their presence in Lake Saiko, Yamanashi Prefecture, and has inspired people to long for them to return.
During the exhibition, the University Museum, The University of Tokyo will be showcasing the oldest specimen of Kunimasu, collected over 100 years ago and found in Tazawako, as well as the "Kuchiguromasu." Don't miss this rare opportunity.
*The "Little Black Masu" is on display at the Tazawako Kunimasu Future Museum.
