A town of merchants and townspeople lined with merchant houses.

Tomachi

The former merchant town of "Tomachi" (Outer Town) is a stark contrast to the inner town lined with samurai residences, with its rows of merchant houses and other buildings, giving it a historic feel. Many old buildings and storehouses remain, and these spaces are still cherished and utilized for shops, restaurants, and more.

The brick storehouse of Ando Brewery in Shimoshinmachi is one of the oldest remaining storehouses in the Tohoku region. The storehouse facing the street was built in 1891, after learning from the repeated fires in Tonomachi (the merchant town). The bricks used were fired in Shiraiwa, Kakunodate Town, and the inside of the storehouse is currently open to the public.

Ota family

Ota family

The Ota family home is located across from Ando Miso and Soy Sauce Brewery. The Ota family was a large landowner in the Senboku region, and their estate, which includes their storehouses, continues all the way to Tamachi Samurai Residence Street. The Ota family’s Western-style building remains on Tamachi Samurai Residence Street.

The current building was built in 1899, and conveys the atmosphere of a merchant’s house to the present day. Inside the storehouse, built at the end of the Edo period, there are hobby and daily necessities actually used by the ancestors of the Tatetsu family, which are open to the public free of charge as the “Tomachi Tatetsu Historical Museum.” The building won the “Hometown Landscape Award” in 2004.
