It opened on July 1, 2017 as a central facility for disseminating information about Tazawako 's history and culture, as well as a message for the future.
The Kunimasu was once an endemic species of Tazawako that was found only in Tazawako , but became extinct in January 1940 when acidic water from Tamagawa River began to be introduced into the lake. The museum raises and exhibits the "miracle fish Kunimasu," which was discovered in Lake Saiko, Yamanashi Prefecture, in 2010, and uses numerous panels and videos to explain the history of the fish's discovery in Lake Saiko after going extinct in Tazawako, the fishing gear and dugout canoes of the time, the lifestyles of the people living by the lake and changes in the environment, and the biology of the Kunimasu.
