If you take a step outside of Semboku City, you will find surrounding areas where you can experience the local activities and culture on a deeper level. Representative examples are the area around Suzuki Sake Brewery in Daisen City and the area along the Akita Inland Line in Kitaakita City. Both are easily accessible from Semboku City, and their proximity makes them easy to incorporate into day trips. By touring these two areas with different scenery, culture, and time flow, you will get a more three-dimensional look at the true face of Akita.
Daisen City is an area where farming villages and merchant townscapes seamlessly intertwine. Among them, Suzuki Sake Brewery is known as a brewery that continues to carefully craft sake using underground water from the Ou Mountains as its brewing water. The attached shop stocks everything from standard to seasonal specials, allowing you to discover the deep flavors that only a brewery can offer. The surrounding area is dotted with small shops, restaurants, and roadside stations, giving you a sense of the simple yet powerful daily life. If you head into the city, you will find Omagari, known for Japan's best fireworks display, and festivals and fireworks events are held all over the area in the summer.
Meanwhile, Kitaakita City is a mountainous area on which the Akita Nairiku Line runs. From the train window, you can see mountains and rivers, each painted in the colors of the four seasons, and simple villages. Along the line, you'll find magnificent natural scenery such as Mount Moriyoshi, small museums that convey local culture, and locally-rooted shops, allowing you to enjoy the detours that only a local railway can offer. While access is modest, the journey is rich in depth, allowing you to carefully savor the atmosphere and scenery at each station.
By using Semboku City as your base and visiting these "other areas," you can experience "another Akita" that is different from the glamorous tourist spots.
