Akita has long been one of the leading rice-producing areas in Japan, and as the saying goes, "Akita, the land of rice, is also the land of sake," making it a true "kingdom of fine sake," outstanding in both the amount of sake produced and consumed.
The prefecture has a long history of sake brewing, with the oldest sake brewery in the prefecture being "Hiraizumi" in Nikaho City, which was founded in 1487 and is known as the third oldest sake brewery in the country. Records show that in 1726, the prefecture boasted as many as 833 sake breweries.
